“This One Is For Our Ancestors.”

The Mishoe Gardner Moore Rawls Foundation

Camp Geechee is — its mission, story roots, and focus on culture, education, and creativity.

Welcome to Camp Geechee

My name is Joshua Mishoe, the creator of Camp Geechee, a manga rooted in Gullah Geechee Culture and African American History. Growing up, I loved anime, superheroes and comics-but I rarely saw stories that reflected me or my people. I knew more about Greek Mythology than I did about my own heritage, and I realized that had to change.

Our people-black people, Gullah Geechee people, have always been heroes. From surviving the horrors of slavery to resisting oppression, to shaping culture, art, and liberation, our stories are powerful, complex, and deserving of recognition. Camp Geechee is my way of honoring that legacy.

I created this project to make sure our history isn’t just preserved but passed down in ways that reach new generations. Let’s be honest, most youth today won’t pick up a history book, but they will read manga, play video games, or watch anime. So I fused imagination and ancestry, preservation and innovation, to create something that educates and empowers while still being dope.

A lot of this was inspired by the work I do with kids in my local community. Like them, I was a creative child who used imagination to get through adversity. After losing my mother, storytelling became my outlet, my healing, and my mission. Camp Geechee and the other stories I am building are born from that journey.

Whether you’re here to learn, to celebrate culture, or the create, know that you’re part of something bigger. You’re keeping the spirit of the ancestors alive.  Welcome to the Camp.
